Sanhoti's very first Annual Picnic brought Bengali families from across Orange County together under the oaks at O'Neill Regional Park in Trabuco Canyon. It was the day our community stopped being a mailing list and started being a neighbourhood.
The day ran from breakfast to evening. Luchi, cholar dal and rabdi-jalebi opened it; lunch was a full Bengali spread of rice and ghee, macher matha diye dal, alu bhaja, mach bhaja, sorse ilish, mutton and chicken curry, with veg dal, begun bhaja, paneer masala and dhokar dalna alongside, finished with chatni, papad and sandesh. Tea, soft drinks and mocktails ran all day, and ice cream arrived in the afternoon.
Between meals there was cricket and badminton on the grass, running races and games for the children, adda under the shade for everyone who would rather talk than run, and antakshari that carried on far longer than planned.
Families joined from Irvine, Tustin, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest, Aliso Viejo and across Orange County. Guests of every background were welcome, as they are at every Sanhoti event.
