Sanhoti's Annual Picnic returned to O'Neill Regional Park in Trabuco Canyon for a full afternoon of food, games and community under the oaks.
Live kitchen. Delicious food. Fun games. An amazing afternoon — that was the promise, and the day delivered on all four.
Our live outdoor kitchen ran throughout, cooking fresh Bengali food to order rather than serving from trays. Welcome drinks of lassi and mocktails greeted arrivals, followed by a full Bengali lunch: sada bhaat, ghee and daal, with maach bhaja, alu potol chingri, shorshe ilish and methi chicken on the non-veg side, and begun bhaja, alu potol, echor'er torkari and matar paneer on the veg side. Aam'er chutney, papad bhaja, mishti doi and ice cream finished it.
On the grass there was cricket, badminton, tug of war and running races for the children. In the shade there was adda and antakshari — the real reason Bengalis picnic in the first place.
The Annual Picnic is Sanhoti's summer fixture, and the easiest event to bring a friend to. Families joined from Irvine, Tustin, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest, Aliso Viejo, Ladera Ranch and across Orange County.
