Uttoron (উত্তরণ) is Sanhoti’s annual Puja Barshiki — the souvenir magazine that Bengali communities publish for Durga Puja, a tradition going back well over a century. This is Volume 1, Issue 1: the first one we have made.
The word means rising, or crossing over. As the editorial puts it, not merely ascent but a journey — from darkness into light, from fear into hope, from division into unity, from stagnation into creativity.
The issue runs to 76 pages, written and assembled by members of the community here in Orange County. It is published in Bengali, with an English editorial.

উত্তরণ : আলোর পথে এগিয়ে চলা
শারদীয়ার শুভক্ষণে আপনাদের সকলকে জানাই আন্তরিক প্রীতি ও শুভেচ্ছা।
আমাদের স্মারিকার নাম “উত্তরণ”। এই নামের মধ্যেই লুকিয়ে আছে উৎসবের প্রকৃত বার্তা। উত্তরণ মানে কেবল উত্থান নয়, উত্তরণ মানে অন্ধকার থেকে আলোয়, ভয় থেকে আশায়, বিভেদ থেকে একতায়, স্থবিরতা থেকে সৃজনশীলতায় যাত্রা।
মা দুর্গার আগমন আমাদের শেখায়—অসুর কেবল পুরাণে নয়, আছে প্রতিদিনের জীবনে। লোভ, হিংসা, বৈষম্য, ঘৃণা আর পরিবেশ ধ্বংসই আজকের যুগের অসুর। তাদের দমন করেই আমরা পাবো প্রকৃত মুক্তি, আর সেই মুক্তিই আমাদের উত্তরণ।
উৎসব কেবল আনন্দে মেতে ওঠার নাম নয়, উৎসব আমাদের শেখায় দায়িত্ব নিতে। প্রতিবেশীর পাশে দাঁড়ানো, প্রকৃতি রক্ষা করা, অন্যায়ের বিরুদ্ধে কণ্ঠ তোলা, ভ্রাতৃত্বের আলো ছড়ানো—এসবই হল পূজার সত্যিকার রূপ।
আসুন, আমরা প্রতিজ্ঞা করি— যেন প্রতিটি ক্ষুদ্র পদক্ষেপ আমাদের নিয়ে যায় মানবিকতার নতুন উচ্চতায়। তাহলে সত্যি সত্যিই আমরা হব “উত্তরণের” যাত্রী॥

Uttoron: A Song of Awakening Light
The drums resound, the conch-shells call, Shiuli blooms and blessings fall. The Mother arrives, her banner high, To banish the dark, to brighten the sky.
Uttoron means to rise, to climb, To dream beyond the bounds of time. Though shadows linger, though nights grow long, Love shall endure, steadfast and strong.
Let hatred fade, let kindness reign, Let Nature heal her wounds of pain. Let hearts unite, let hands entwine, This Puja be a vow divine.
Together we rise, together we shine, Through Uttoron’s path, your life and mine. A festival not just of joy, but of right— A promise to spread humanity’s light.
