Uttoron (উত্তরণ) is Sanhoti’s annual Puja Barshiki, the souvenir magazine Bengali communities publish for Durga Puja. This is the second issue — 96 pages, twenty more than the first, written, drawn and photographed by members of the community here in Orange County.
It is in Bengali and English. Inside: essays on Bengali history, including Ila Mitra and the Tebhaga movement and Dhirendranath Datta’s 1948 stand for the Bengali language; a trek to Lachen and the Kanchenjunga in North Sikkim; a serialised Bengali adventure; a visit to the Hilbert Museum in Orange; recipes from churros to Dhakai mutton; and stories, paintings and photographs by the community’s children.
The back half is the year itself — Saraswati Puja, Poila Boishakh, the picnic, the soccer league, kids’ sports and the Srijan art workshops — in photographs.
Editorial
From “I” to “we”
Autumn arrives differently in a distant land. Yet, somewhere within us, the season returns with a familiar rhythm, a remembered fragrance, a quiet pull toward home. And perhaps that is what community is: a way of carrying home forward.
Here in Orange County, Southern California, our Bengali identity continues to take new shape through art, literature, music, celebration, friendship, and service. It lives in the voices of our children, in the creativity of our artists, in the warmth of shared gatherings, and in the countless unseen acts that hold a community together.
We come from different journeys. We carry different memories, ideas, and aspirations. Yet differences need not divide us. A community becomes richer when many voices are heard, stronger when many hands work together, and more meaningful when success is shared rather than owned.
SANHOTI is a celebration of that spirit. And UTTORON is where some of those voices find a lasting home—a space for our stories, our imagination, our memories, and our hopes for what comes next.
May creativity keep us open. May friendship keep us close. May prosperity bring generosity. May disagreement never diminish respect. And may every celebration remind us that peace and camaraderie are built not in grand gestures, but in the simple choice to stand beside one another.
For true progress is never a solitary ascent. It is the journey of many, moving forward together. From “I” to “we” — therein lies the true spirit of UTTORON.
Shubho Sharodiya!

A home away from home
It gives me immense joy to welcome you to SANHOTI’s Durga Puja 2026 celebrations and to this year’s edition of our Puja magazine, UTTORON.
SANHOTI was founded with a simple but meaningful vision—to create a home away from home where our culture, traditions, friendships, and shared values could flourish. Today that vision has grown into a vibrant community built on participation, creativity, inclusion, and togetherness.
Durga Puja is much more than a religious celebration. It represents courage, resilience, compassion, and the triumph of good over adversity. Maa Durga also reminds us of the strength and leadership of women. At SANHOTI, we are proud of the many women who lead, organize, create, perform, and contribute so meaningfully to every aspect of our community.
Our children remain the heartbeat of SANHOTI. Growing up far from the land of their parents and grandparents, they are forming their own connection with our heritage through music, dance, literature, art, sports, and celebration. It is our responsibility to give them a space where they can stay rooted in tradition while confidently shaping their own future.
UTTORON reflects this spirit beautifully. Its stories, poems, photographs, artwork, memories, and creative expressions bring together voices from across generations. Each contribution is different, yet together they represent one shared identity—a community connected by culture, creativity, friendship, and mutual respect.
As SANHOTI continues to grow, may we always remain welcoming, inclusive, and united. Our diversity strengthens us, and our shared values bring us closer.
On behalf of SANHOTI, I offer my heartfelt gratitude to our volunteers, sponsors, contributors, performers, families, and every member whose time, effort, and enthusiasm make our celebrations possible.
May Maa Durga bless every family with peace, happiness, good health, strength, and prosperity.
With warm regards — Suvendu Laha, President, SANHOTI
